6 Podcasts That Got Me Through 2018
By Yarminiah Rosa
When it comes to audio, I’m a full on geek. Ask any friend and they’ll confirm I mention at least one podcast episode per conversation. It’s how I get my news, laughs, quirky facts, history lessons, opinions and daily inspiration. As a freelancer and entrepreneur I spend most days alone at a computer working, cultivating vision, strategy, and doing everything in my power to stay motivated to do the work that serves my higher purpose. Sometimes music gets me through a solo day of working, sometimes I need a soulful conversation to help me finish just one more design task before I lose my cool. The following podcast episodes got me through critical moments in 2018. I hope that in sharing them, you glean a sense of hope to get through 2019.
super soul conversations
Goodness, where do I begin? I’ve cried. I’ve laughed, I’ve frantically forwarded this podcast to people I love. This podcast has been such a blessing to my life and is responsible for accelerating my emotional and spiritual growth. Though most of these conversations began as TV episodes on Oprah’s network, the audio versions have resonated with me most. This episode in particular is nothing short of amazing. Amy Purdy’s story of dying and choosing to come back to life made me sit up straight in my seat and take account of everything I am grateful for at this very moment.
2.How i built this
This show is for anyone who sticks around for the bloopers of their favorite movie. Those who obsess over #bts and hoard autobiographies. This podcast has time and time again reaffirmed that the process to manifesting your dreams takes great courage, patience, persistence and a bit of nutty ambition to make it work. I highly recommend this to my fellow entrepreneurs out there who need a boost of motivation or a sincere peek into what happens #bts when shit hits the fan (spoiler alert: these CEOs survive and build multi million dollar businesses.)
3. Jesus + Jollof
This podcast never fails to move me to tears… of laughter. These two are incredibly candid and radiate a bond that simply cannot be faked. They’re the real deal. For all my first generation folks who can relate to the fears, joys and random facts of what it means to be from two places at once, this podcast is for us my friend. This episode in particular sheds light on what the struggle is like before the fame and money come. Take a listen and keep a tissue near, you may laugh, you may cry or you may do both at the same time - who knows?
4. hey, girl.
The simplicity of the podcast profile image says it all. This show doesn’t waste your time with fluff, it cuts straight to the point: great conversation with female warriors. This particular episode put my life into perspective in a very real way. Niaje’s story could be any of our stories at any given moment. It’s a reminder to fight for your health and honor your body. Take a listen and let me know if her honesty resonated with you.
5. Black Girl In OM
What I like most about this podcast is the growth of its hosts. Season by season you can hear them becoming increasingly confident interviewers and more genuine in their storytelling. Its a show dedicated to wellness for women of color. This episode resonated with me deeply. Mainly because of the rawness of the story and the familiarity of being stuck in a cycle of defeat and lack of hope. Hearing how the hero makes it out and is thriving today is enough to make anyone stand up and applause at the end of this episode.
This show is so good it doesn’t even need a title! It’s part meditation, part group therapy, part psychoanalysis. This episode will have you reexamining the most challenging parts of your life and the toxic mindsets that leave you drained - I promise this podcast will add value to your day.
